CREATIVE SPACE

Classes are held on Fridays at the Community Centre, Peebles, from 9.30-11.30. Contact us to book a place.

We're now about to start Part 2  of our Dutch Masters topic so for 24th Feb have a look at Rubens' Self Portrait with Isabella Brandt. Bring in a print-out of this painting and a small mirror if you can.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Week 1 involved a tonal study of Vermeer's "The Lacemaker". A contemporary equivalent was set up with Miriam at work on her sewing machine; students spent time information-gathering in the form of sketches and notes.

In week 2 these notes were used to develop an abstract piece, a figure study or a still life.

In week 3 Pieter Breughel's "Children's Games"  was our inspiration, and we looked at Anna Gardiner's paintings of children for a contemporary slant.

For week 4 we recaptured the happy absorption of childhood with a messy time, followed by development of week 3 work.

In week 5 our focus was Jacob van Ruisdael's depiction of 17th century technology and landscape in  Mill at Wijk near Duustede; Two Undershot Watermills with Men Opening a Sluice; Wheatfields. Varied techniques were then used to make paintings of contemporary technology.

PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL BE NO CLASS ON 10TH FEB

Week 6, a session on 21st Century landscape, marked the end of Part 1 of our Dutch Masters topic. Please bring sketches and photos from which to work. Inspiration came from Anna King  ; Kate Downie , cooling towers, lamp-posts, filling stations and the Falkirk Wheel. Some brilliant work was produced.
